One of them on its own deserves a phone call; two or more deserve a recovery truck rather than the motorway.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"pmm-mgb-sym\">\n<li><strong>Crunching when shifting<\/strong>The classic sign of worn synchromesh rings. It usually starts in one gear, cold or hot, and spreads.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Noise that climbs with speed<\/strong>Whining or rumbling that follows road speed rather than engine speed points at the gearbox rather than the engine.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jumping out of gear<\/strong>A lever that pops out of a particular gear under load is wear, not habit. It does not correct itself.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gears refusing to engage<\/strong>Being locked out of a gear, or having to force it, means something inside has moved beyond adjustment.<\/li>\n<li><strong>No drive at all<\/strong>The car revs but does not move, or moves with a bang. Stop immediately and have it recovered.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Common causes behind these complaints are worn synchromesh rings and plain mechanical wear, and sometimes the way the car has been used. Regular oil changes matter more than most drivers think: our page on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ganzeboom.net\/en\/remanufacturing\/maintenance\">gearbox maintenance<\/a> covers what servicing prevents.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what\">What remanufacturing actually means<\/h2>\n<p>The gearbox is dismantled to the last component, cleaned and measured against specification. A worn synchromesh ring is a manageable repair; keep forcing it and the damage spreads to gears, shafts and bearings until remanufacturing costs multiples of what it needed to.
