When that control module fails, it does not automatically mean an expensive new unit plus dealer programming. With TCU cloning we transfer all data from the original module 1-to-1 onto a donor unit. At Ganzeboom we have combined transmission knowledge with modern programming equipment since 1968, so a clone does not just succeed on the bench but actually works in your car.

TCU cloning

A successful write is not the same as a successful clone

Read, write, done? It is not that simple. Transferring data from an original to a donor without checks risks a module that will not communicate, or a gearbox that shifts badly. That is why we work through seven fixed checks, from hardware identification to a stable power supply during the write.

Ask for advice nowCall +31 (0)546 819 510

Jump to:

What is TCU cloning?

When is cloning the right solution?

The seven checks for a safe clone

When you should not clone

Diagnosis first, then programming

TCU cloning by gearbox family

Frequently asked questions

Send us your request

What is TCU cloning?

TCU cloning means copying the complete software and data of an original transmission control unit onto an identical donor unit. It goes further than the calibration file alone: the internal and external flash memory and the EEPROM are copied too. It is precisely that EEPROM which holds vehicle-specific information such as the VIN, the coding and the immobilizer data. After a successful clone, the donor behaves in the car exactly like the original.

With professional equipment such as the Magic Motorsport FLEX, many modern TCUs can be read and written in bench mode. But the fact that a unit is readable does not mean a true 1-to-1 clone is possible. That depends on the hardware generation and the protocol, which is exactly why every clone at Ganzeboom starts with identification.

When is TCU cloning the right solution?

Cloning is often the fastest and most economical route when the original module can still be read:

Your TCU is faulty and a new one is unavailable or has a long lead time.

A new unit plus dealer programming costs more than a cloned donor.

You want to fit a used or remanufactured TCU without a dealer visit.

The car is older and original parts are scarce.

Not sure whether cloning is possible for your gearbox? Call or email us with the type number and we will look into it with you straight away.

The seven checks for a safe clone

Before we transfer data from original to donor, we always go through these seven points:

1

Identify the hardware

Never rely on the gearbox type alone. We check the OE number, the Bosch, Continental or Temic number, the hardware generation, the software version and, where needed, the MCU and PCB revision. Two TCUs can fit the same gearbox and still contain different electronics.

2

Confirm cloneability

A TCU being readable and writable does not automatically mean a true 1-to-1 clone is supported. We first establish the exact protocol and the generation of the unit before anything happens.

3

Maps are not a full backup

A calibration file on its own is not enough to reproduce a control module. Important data also lives in the flash memory and in the (emulated) EEPROM, including the VIN, coding and immobilizer data. We know exactly which memories are transferred.

4

Save both units first

Before anything is written, we make a full backup of the original and of the donor, including identification data, coding and stored fault codes. We never remove the way back before it is certain that the clone works.

5

Security and coding

Some TCUs are part of the vehicle’s security. Even after a successful clone, coding, component protection, immobilizer alignment, variant configuration or a basic setting may still be needed. A clone is only finished when the car drives.

6

Stable power supply

A voltage dip while writing flash or EEPROM can damage a module beyond repair. That is why we always work with a regulated power supply, the correct pinout, good ground connections and reliable wiring.

7

Never copy the fault across

Cloning solves data compatibility, not mechanical or electrical faults. Wiring, sensors, solenoids, hydraulics or internal damage call for a proper diagnosis first. The correct basic settings and adaptations follow after that.

When you should not clone

The most important professional rule is knowing when to stop. We never force a write when:

the hardware of the original and the donor differs;

the original file is corrupt;

the memory structure of the units does not match;

the protocol has not been confirmed.

In those cases we look for another solution, for example a suitable remanufactured TCU from stock. That way you avoid losing a working donor to an attempt that never had a chance.

Diagnosis first, then programming

Fault codes after replacing a TCU do not automatically mean the replacement unit is faulty. Often the module still needs coding or adaptations, or the cause lies outside the electronics. Contact us with the type number of your transmission or the OE code of the module and you will receive a concrete quotation quickly.

</details>
<details>

Is a cloned TCU as reliable as the original?

Yes, provided the hardware is identical and all memories have been transferred completely. That is exactly why we work through seven fixed checks. A clone that passes them behaves in the car exactly like the original module.

</details>
<details>

Can every TCU be cloned?

No. Whether a true 1-to-1 clone is possible depends on the hardware generation and the supported protocol. Some units can be read but not fully cloned. We establish that up front, before anything is written.

</details>
<details>

Does my car still need coding after TCU cloning?

Sometimes. With a full clone the donor takes over the coding and the VIN of the original. Depending on the make, component protection, immobilizer alignment or a basic setting may still be needed. We tell you up front what your car will require.

</details>
<details>

What is the difference between TCU cloning and TCU programming?

With cloning we copy the complete contents of your original module onto a donor, including vehicle-specific data. With programming, new software or coding is written onto a module, for example through online programming at the dealer. Cloning is often the fastest route when the original can still be read.

</details>
<details>

I have fault codes after replacing my TCU. Is the replacement unit faulty?

Usually not. A code such as P0610 often points to a module that still needs coding or adaptation, or to a cause outside the TCU, such as wiring or sensors. Have a diagnosis carried out before replacing more parts.

</details>
<details>

Does Ganzeboom also clone DSG mechatronic units?

Yes, the mechatronic of a DSG gearbox is essentially a TCU with a hydraulic control unit.
