The transmission control unit measures clutch fill times, hydraulic pressure, friction behaviour and driving style, and adjusts its shift strategy to match. Replace a valve body, a mechatronic unit or the whole gearbox, and those learned values no longer describe the parts that are fitted. It measures how long a clutch takes to fill, what line pressure a smooth shift needs and how the friction material behaves. With that information it compensates for normal wear across the whole life of the gearbox.<\/p>\n<p>Those values belong to the condition of that specific gearbox. They are not a setting you carry over, but a profile built around worn clutches, a bedded-in valve body and the pressure that combination needed at the time.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"when\">When do adaptations become invalid?<\/h2>\n<p>As soon as major components are replaced, the hydraulic and mechanical behaviour of the gearbox changes significantly. The stored values then describe a situation that no longer exists. That applies to:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"arrow\">\n<li>a full gearbox rebuild;<\/li>\n<li>valve body replacement;<\/li>\n<li>mechatronic replacement or cloning;<\/li>\n<li>solenoid replacement;<\/li>\n<li>torque converter replacement;<\/li>\n<li>clutch replacement on a DCT or DSG;<\/li>\n<li>internal hard part replacement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If the unit is not allowed to relearn, shift quality can suffer even though the repair itself is technically correct. That is why a good rebuild sometimes feels like a bad one.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"steps\">The three steps after a repair<\/h2>\n<div class=\"pmm-adap-steps\">\n<div class=\"pmm-adap-step\"><span class=\"pmm-adap-num\">1<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Repair complete<\/h3>\n<p>The rebuild, the mechatronic unit or the valve body is finished and fitted. Mechanically and hydraulically the gearbox is back to how it should be, but the control unit does not know that yet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"pmm-adap-step\"><span class=\"pmm-adap-num\">2<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Reset adaptations<\/h3>\n<p>Using manufacturer diagnostic equipment we carry out the adaptation reset or basic settings. The old learned values are cleared and the unit falls back to its starting values.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"pmm-adap-step is-final\"><span class=\"pmm-adap-num\">3<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Driving adaptation<\/h3>\n<p>The prescribed driving procedure under the correct conditions, including oil temperature, load and engine speed. Only here does the unit truly learn the new gearbox. That is step two, not the last step. Most modern transmissions then require a structured driving procedure under specific operating conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Without those learning cycles the control unit keeps running on default values. They are safe, but they are not matched to that gearbox. The method, the conditions and the order differ by manufacturer, and following the factory procedure matters just as much as the mechanical repair itself.<\/p>\n<div class=\"pmm-adap-brands\">\n<div class=\"pmm-adap-brand\">\n<h3>Volkswagen DSG<\/h3>\n<p>DSG basic settings, followed by prescribed driving cycles. On a DQ200, DQ250 or 0AM that includes the clutch adaptations. In practice this work is usually done with VCDS.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"pmm-adap-brand\">\n<h3>ZF<\/h3>\n<p>ZF transmissions learn clutch fill pressures and shift timing under controlled driving conditions. On a 6HP or 8HP the adaptation procedure after a rebuild is a fixed part of the job, not an optional extra.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"pmm-adap-brand\">\n<h3>Ford<\/h3>\n<p>The 6F35, 8F35 and 10R80 require adaptive drive routines after a rebuild. Until those routines are completed the gearbox shifts on default values, which is often mistaken for a problem with the rebuild itself.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"pmm-adap-brand\">\n<h3>Mercedes-Benz<\/h3>\n<p>Mercedes continuously adapts hydraulic pressures and clutch application behaviour. Volkswagen calls this the basic settings. For VAG vehicles VCDS is commonly used. More important than the tool is completing the correct driving procedure afterwards, otherwise the reset is only half the job.<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details>\n<summary>My gearbox shifts harshly after a rebuild. Has the rebuild failed?<\/summary>\n<div>Not necessarily. Harsh or slow shifting straight after a rebuild often points to adaptations that have not been reset, or that have not been relearned yet.
